On Monday the 10th of June 2024, Collingwood matched up against Melbourne, In big freeze number 10, to raise awareness and funds for the MND foundation. MND is a disease in which has no cure to this current date , and kills hundreds of people world wide each year.
Who started this campaign and why is it so important?
Neale Daniher is an Australian former professional footballer and coach, widely known for his significant contributions to the Australian Football League (AFL). Born on February 15, 1961, Daniher played for the Essendon Football Club, where his promising career was hampered by numerous injuries. After retiring as a player, he transitioned into coaching and held various roles, including head coach of the Melbourne Football Club. Daniher's life took a dramatic turn in 2013 when he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND). In response, he became a passionate advocate for MND research, founding the Big Freeze campaign in 2014. This annual fundraising event features notable Australians plunging into a pool of icy water, symbolising the fight against this debilitating disease. The Big Freeze has raised millions of dollars for MND research, highlighting Daniher's enduring legacy both on and off the field. His tireless efforts have brought immense awareness to MND, earning him widespread respect and admiration across Australia.
Why do both Collingwood and Melbourne verse in the big freeze campaign every year?
Collingwood and Melbourne face off each year in the Big Freeze campaign as part of the annual Queen's Birthday match in the AFL. This tradition began in 2001 and has become a significant event on the AFL calendar. When Neale Daniher initiated the Big Freeze campaign in 2014, the Queen's Birthday match was chosen as the centrepiece for the fundraising event. The high-profile nature of the game between two of the AFL's oldest and most storied clubs provides a prominent platform to raise awareness and funds for MND research. The involvement of both clubs, coupled with the unique and entertaining element of celebrities sliding into icy water, has helped the Big Freeze become a highly anticipated and impactful event, uniting the football community in support of a crucial cause.
