The Comedian's Guide to The Gong Show

By George Cooke

Over the past couple of weeks comedy has been brought to Perth with the comedy festival and Jerry Senfield but also has been bought to Shock Radio with the recent attics of Bec and Stuart breaking the ground of attempting Perth comedy's most well known comedy challenge, The Gong Show. Held at the Comedy Lounge in the Perth CBD, the challenge is for a comedian to go on stage and tell jokes for 3 mins but with a twist the crowd has been given a yellow plate that if they don't like the jokes or the comedian the plate will be put up and if lots of plates are held up the judges will play a loud gong elimating the comedian and from the prize of $300 as we heard from Stu and Bec the challenge was hard but does have good memories for a couple of newcomers so what do comedians make of the Gong Show. I've been a stand up comedian since the end of 2021 and also been doing the Gong show since the start of the year and I have learn the Do's and Dons of how to do Gong so here's the advice.

1. Time is Everything

For a 3 minute challenge you would think it's an easy thing to do and tell some jokes and come out with $300 in your pocket but as one wise person in your life will tell you time is everything especially when telling jokes and time is your element it's best to do in your set that you make short joke that could last from 30 seconds to a minute the short jokes they are the more crowd will get more from you which helps more in the outcome of who is the winner.

2. Remember your crowd

People like to say comedy is soft but the truth is comedy is evoluting like most art forms people are changing taste with what they like and sadly sometimes if your humor is dark or offensive I'm afraid you may need to go to the writng wall. No one says you have to write a safe joke for everyone because no one will like that either. Sounds complitcated don't worry it is meant to be. Writing jokes is basically trying a challenge of what will make a group of different people from different backgrounds all laugh in the room. If you feel nervious don't worry it's normal it's what your meant to have and soon you will jokes that everyone will have a laugh at.
