Last Month, The Perth Comedy Festival was held around the city having many comedians including local acts like Colin Ebsworth and Daniel Delby as well as national acts such like Rhys Nicolson who all put on great shows however two comics who I was grateful to sit down with on the Friday afternoon on Shock Radio and learn more about was Sam Bowden and Anthony Locascio.
Both hail from NSW (Bowden originally being raised in QLD) and been doing comedy for nearly 10 years and came to Perth to show their solo shows, Bowden's Don't Panic It's Happened Before and Locascio's Pappou. When asked about their almost long time in comedy the duo responded with that at the end of the day you will recevive no cake but maybe a pay raise and maybe a cupcake, It's a long ride that you stick with it that you first love at the first gig but at the 5th gig you lose some love but at the 6th gig it is regained and by 3 years you say let's keep it going or get off the comedy horse. Asking what got the lads into comedy, Sam said it was a mix of thing when started his carreer at 14 crossing with his love of watching the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Gala on TV and being a bratty kid in drama class with his teacher putting him in the Class Clowns compeition which Bowden said the rest was history from there. Anthony had a different career path when becoming a comedian having already been a lawyer which Locascio says he hated not doing much but remembering his family watching Eddie Murphy and Carl Barron however his family were not always seen as supportive with Anthony saying it's not wise to tell your first generation Italian-Greek parents you want to work in the arts.
Locascio's show is called Pappou which is a homage to his grandfather who was a soccer player in Greece who moved to Australia which Anthony draws similarities to him and himself. Sam's show Don't Panic It's Happenend Before is all about history. Both comics praise each other's show with Bowden calls a breath of fresh air in comedy and Anthony calls Sam's show simple spectacular.
After speaking with the boys and seeing their shows all I can say is whoever is saying comedy is dying needs to see Sam Bowden and or Anthony Locascio both bring a great act to a city which is seeing less and less entertainment everyday.
